A cell is made up of thousands of atoms , yet the 'cell' is the basic structural unit of living organisms . It is because a cell is the smallest unit which is capable of living as an organism ; to carry on the life processes . In simpler words , a cell can intake food , respirate , excrete and reproduce ( asexual reproduction ; like amoeba ) , that's why cell is called the basic structural unit of living organisms .
