Mendeleev choice of formulae of compounds as the basis for deciding the position of an element in his table was a good one because the formulae of the compounds formed by an atom(s) particular element is dependent on the valency which is a function of number of valence electrons. Now, if the formula of compounds of two elements with a particular element is same, then we can say that there is some similarity in the no. of electrons in atoms of both the elements which results in their similarity in chemical properties.
