Magnesium ribbon should be cleaned before burning in air because It reacts with atmospheric oxygen and forms magnesium oxide (MgO)layer which is very stable compound In order to prevent further reactions with oxygen, it is therefore necessary to clean the ribbon day to remove the layer MgO.

Because magnesium is a very reactive element, it react with oxygen vigoursly and form a layer of magnesium oxide which is unable to burn, So we need to clean magnesium ribbon before burning
