Let us suppose that one man alone can finish the work in x days and one boy alone can finish it in y days. Then,
one man's one day's work =1x
One boy's one day's work =1y
∴ Eight men's one day's work = 8x
12 boy′s one day's work = 12y
According to question it is given that 8 men and 12 boys can finish the work in 10 days
10(8x+12y)=1⇒80x+120y=1 .................(i)
Again, 6 men and 8 boys can finish the work in 14 days.
∴14(6x+8y)=1⇒84x+112y=1 ...........(ii)
Putting 1x=u and 1y=v in equations (i) and (ii), we get
80u+120u−1=0
84u+112v−1=0
By using cross-multiplication,
⇒u−120+112=−v−80+84=180×112−120×84
⇒u−8=v−4=1−1120
⇒u=−8−1120=1140 and v=−4−1120=1280
u=1140⇒1x=1140⇒x=140
v=1280⇒1y=1280⇒y=280
One man alone can finish the work in 140 days and one boy alone can finish the work in 280 days.
