• The historians use the term feudalism to describe the economic, legal, political and social relationship that existed in Europe in medieval era • The term “medieval era’ refers to a period in European history between 5th to 15th centuries • Feudalism is derived from a German word ‘feud’ which means a piece of land. • It refers to a kind of agricultural production which based on relationship between lords and peasants • The peasants performed labour services for the lords who in exchange provided military protection and had extensive judicial control over peasants • Although its roots have been traced to Roman empire, but feudalism as an established way of life had emerged in 11th century
