The plateau is divided into two road divisions i.e.the central Highlands and malwa plateau. It lies to the north of the narmada river . It is wider in West and goes narrowing in East.

The Central Highlands liea to north of the narmada rive. It covers the major portion of the Malwa plateau. The rivers in this region flow from southwest to northeast; which indicates the slope of this region. It is wider in the west and narrower in the east.
