You missed something if ammeter is connected parallel then it will definitely burn or break the circuit and if voltmeter is connected in series it will show wrong reading cuz resistance of the circuit will be increased.

Ammeter has very low resistance so, it is always connected in series across the terminals of a cell. Whereas, voltmeter, being a higher resistance device, is always connected in parallels across the ends between which potential difference has to be measured.
