It is the series of compounds in which one compound differs from the other by CH2 unit.if the compounds posses same functional group then homologous series is defined as the series of compounds in which the same functional group substitutes for the hydrogen in the carbon chain.the homologous series differs by CH2 or 14 amu (atomic mass unit) as the molecular mass increases in homologous series there is change in the physical properties which include density, melting and boiling point

Homologous series is a series of hydrocarbons in the increasing order of carbon atoms such that each preceding member exceeds the succeeding member by a CH2 unit and 14 a.m.u. They have similar methods of preparation, similar chemical properties and slightly dissimilar physical properties. Eg :- Alkanes (CnH2n+1) = Methane (CH4), Ethane (C2H6), Propane (C3H8), etc.
