Take a metal and a non metal say, sodium and oxygen, respectively. In order to attain stable configuration, an Na atom would have to lose an electron ie, form an Na+ ion. Here, +1 is reduction number. In order to attain stable configuration, an O2 atom would have to gain two electrons to form an O2- ion. Here, -2 is oxidation number.
