Magnesium ribbon is cleaned before burning in order to remove the layer of basic magnesium oxide which is formed due to the slow action of moisture on it

Magnesium ribbon has a coating of 'magnesium oxide' and some impurities on its surface. MgO is formed by the slow action of moist air on it. So, Mg ribbon is cleaned with sand paper in oder to remove the layer of these oxides.
