    Because Hindi is spoken by only 40% of the total population of India and thus use of Hindi as official language was not possible in non Hindi speaking states .Thus non Hindi speaking states demanded to continue to use English in India even after Independence. Due regional dilects of India both Hindi and English was adopted as official language
