1. Rawlatt act satyagraha was widespread but is limited in some states and towns . 2. When Mahatma Gandhi called off rawlatt act satyagraha due to jallianwala bagh massacre he wanted to launch a nationwide movement against british rule. 3. He knows that no such movement can be launched without bringing Hindus and Muslims together 4. When Ali brothers began discussing with Mahatma Gandhi about the possibility of mass action in support of khalifat issue and to represent khalifa temporal power . 5 . Gandhi hi see it as a good opportunity to bring Muslims under the unified umbrella of swaraj. 6. To bring Hindus & Muslims together Gandhi ji supported khalifat movement as well as swaraj

(i) The Rowlatt Satyagraha had been a wide spread movement, no doubt, but it was still limited mostly to cities and towns. (ii) Mahatma Gandhi now felt the need to launch a more broad-based movement in India. (iii) But he was certain that no such movement could be organised without bringing the Hindus and Muslims closer together. One way of doing this, he felt, was to take up the Khilafat issue. Therefore, he decided to support this issue.
