The British government had closed large areas of reserved forests and the people were not permitted to enter in them. This affected the life of tribals because their livelihood was totally dependent on the forests. They could not collect fruits. The tribals believed that not only their livelihoods were affected , but their traditional rights were denied. When the government began forcing them to do begar, the tribal people revolted. They were led by Alluri Sitaram Raju and under his leadership, the tribals attacked British offices, and attempted to kill British officials.
