It is a covalent compond formed upon bonding between one carbon and two oxygen atoms. Though carbon is a good fuel and oxygen supports combustion, carbon dioxide helps extinguish fires. It is an acidic gas which when passed through lime water, yeilds CaCO3 changing colour of lime water to milky. It produces brisk effervescence and is a greenhouse gas.
