they both have 55 marbles.so, ram has x no. of marbles and shyam has 55-x no. of marbles. both of lost 5 marbles each so now, no. of marbles Ram has=x-5 no. of marbles Shyam has = 55 - x - 5 = 50 - x now, (x - 5)(50 - x)= 164 50x - x^2 - 250 + 5x = 164 -x^2 + 55x - 250 = 164 -x^2 +55x -414=0 -(x^2 -55x + 414)= 0 x^2 - 55x +414 = 0 x^2 - 46x - 9x - 414 = 0 x(x - 46) -9(x - 46) = 0 (x - 46 )(x - 9) = 0 x = 46,9 so, the no. of marbles Ram and shyam had to start with are 46 and 9 marbles respectively or vice versa.
