When 5% alkaline potassium permanganate solution is added drop by drop to propanol taken in the test tube, then its purple colour disappears as it oxidizes the propanol to its respective carboxylic acid i.e. propanoic acid. It is because alkaline potassium permanganate is known to be a strong oxidizing agent , which oxidizes the primary alcohol- propanol to propanal and then finally to propanoic acid. Chemical equation: alk. KMnO4 CH3CH3CH2OH ----->CH3CH3CH2COOH
