When electricity is passed through an aqueous solution of sodium chloride it decomposes to form sodium hydroxide . This process is called chlor alkali process in which chlor stands for chlorine and alkali stands for sodium hydroxide . 2NaCl + 2H2O = 2NaOH + Cl2 + H2
