n=c/v. (where n is refractive index, c is speed of light in vacuum ie, 3*10^8 m/s and v is speed of light in the medium.) Relative refractive index => n12=n1/n2=v2/v1 and n21=n2/n1=v1/v2.

Refractive index = speed of light in medium 1/speed of light in medium 2
