These three ports had become important cities by 1800, largely as a result of trade in slaves or plantation-grown products: Liverpool grew wealthy from plantation-grown cotton. Bristol's wealth was partly based on slave-produced sugar. Glasgow became the United Kingdom's main tobacco port.
