Magnesium is an extremely reactive metal.In the presence of oxygen,it form a layer of magnesium oxide this layer is quite and stable and dosen't allow further the reaction of magnesium oxide.Thus it is necessary to clean a magnesium ribbon so that underlying the metal available for this reaction.
