The poet wanted to convey a bitter truth of life, that nothing is eternal in this temporary world. One needs to learn to let things go and embrace this harsh reality of life and move on. By letting go of one's dearest possessions, he/she will be able to move forward in life, grieving over the loss of something/ someone which was meant to go will only make life harder.
