Let Jacob's age be x and his son's be y According to 1st condition x+5 = 3( y + 5) i.e. x - 3y = 10-----------------------------------Eqn1 According to 2nd condition x - 5 = 7( y - 5) i.e. x - 7y = - 30--------------------------------Eqn 2 Then by Elimination method we get y = 10 and then substituting value of y in any of the equations x = 40 So... Jacob's age is 40 years and his son's age is 10 years....
