An electron is a negatively charged subatomic particle. It can be either free or not attached to any atom or bound to the nucleus of an atom. Electrons in atoms exist in spherical shells of various radii, representing energy levels. Each electron carries one unit of negative charge (1.602 x 10-19 coulomb) and has a very small mass as compared with that of a neutron or proton.
