Lewis acids are electron pair accceptors.; because central metal ions  have one or more empty orbitals they act  Lewis acids when coordinating with ligands ( ie. a Lewis base ). Transition metals can act as a Lewis acid by accepting electron pairs  from a donor Lewis bases ( ie. Ligand ) to form a complex ion / coordination compound .
