Following are a few advantages of the heating effect of current:
1)The heating effect of current is used in heating appliances such as electric iron, room heaters and water heaters.
2) An electric fuse is an important application of the heating effect of current. The working principle of the fuse is based on the heating effect of current.
3) They are also utilised in electric bulbs and electric lamps to produce light.
Following are the disadvantages of the heating effect of current:
1) When an electric current flows through the conductor, a part of it is converted into heat energy. This is a waste of energy.
2) The heat produced can damage the insulation and other electrical components, or even cause a fire
3) Reduces the life of several components in the circuit
4) An additional cooling system needs to be added to the circuit to counter the heating effect. This adds to the cost.
