Bleaching powder is needed in the manufacture of chloroform. Bleaching powder (CaOCl2) supplies the necessary chlorine and slaked lime (calcium hydroxide).

CaOCl₂+H₂O→Ca(OH)₂+Cl₂

A paste of bleaching powder in water is distilled with ethanol or acetone to obtain chloroform.
