A mean colour is that colour whose wavelength lies in between that of violet and red. For white light, yellow colour is, generally, taken to be the mean colour.

If the refractive indices corresponding to the mean colour, violet and red are μ, μand μrespectively. The deviation corresponding to yellow colour is taken as the mean deviation.
