The sperms in males and egg or ova in female are responsible for birth of new individual. Sperms can have X and Y chromosomes while ova can have X and X chromosomes. When sperm containing X chromosomes fuses with ova, the new individual is female. If sperm containing Y chromosomes fuses with ova, the new individual is male.
