MgCl2 is an ionic compound because this compound is formed by the transfer of electrons between magnesium atom and chlorine atoms. Magnesium atom loses two electrons to form magnesium cation whereas each chlorine atom accepts one electron to form chloride ion (anion). Magnesium (Atomic number = 12) has electronic configuration 2, 8, 2. It loses 2 electrons to complete octet configuration in its valence shell. Chlorine (Atomic number = 17) has electronic configuration 2, 8, 7.
