When carboxylic acid (having alpha-hydrogen) reacts with Red P , X2 (X=F,Cl,Br,I) and water, then there is formation of alpha halogenated carboxylic acid. For eg. Ch3Cooh + Red P + Cl2 + H2O = ch2(cl)cooh
