Trick to determine Electron Withdrawing group and Electron Donating groups?
  • 1 answers
Those milecules/elements who have lone pair are electron donating grps. Alkyl are always electron donating .You can simply identify them in alliphatic molecules but the confusion arise in aromatic compound for example halogens are normally electron withdrawing but when connected in aromatic compound it act as electron donating. You can clear your confusion by just remembering 2 things:- 1. Halogens connected in aromatic compound are always E.D.G 2.any compound like (OCH3) in which Oxygen is more negative than carbon. If it is connected to ar.compound from Oxygen side (more -ve) than it will act as E.D.G as bcz carbon will try to repell the electrons.but if it is cnnctd through Carbon (less -ve) it will act as E.W.G bcz oxygen is nt directly connected to ar.ring so it will try to attract electrons Hope it will help 2 clear your confusion and remembering E.W.G and E.D.G
