It is based on the principle that when 4 resistors P,Q,R,S are connected in a circuit to form a bridge by connecting a galvanometer using key K2 and a cell using key K1 then by closing the key K1 first and K2 later. If galvanometer does not show any deflection then the bridge is balanced
