The textile industry second largest after agriculture in India because:

(i) Cotton textile industry contributes 14 percent of the total industrial production.
(ii) It provides employment to 35 million persons directly – the second largest after agriculture.
(iii) It earns foreign exchange of about 24.6 percent (4 percent of GDP).

Because in india land is fertile. So most people engaged in agriculture. After that people who are not doing the agriculture they started to do industrial job. In textile industry more workers are needed due to its demand.
