The whole numbers are first rounded as specified, i.e., rounded to the nearest ten, hundred and so on. Then the sum of the rounded whole numbers is found to estimate the sum of the whole numbers. Estimate the sum 1,472 + 398 + 772 + 164 by rounding each number to the nearest hundred. First, round each number to the nearest hundred. Then, add the rounded numbers together. Estimating a Sum. A quick way to estimate the sum of two numbers is to round each number and then add the rounded numbers.
