The ability of the atom to lose electrons easily determines whether it is metallic or not. in small atoms, the number of shells are less and thus the free electrons present in the outer shell of the atom is more closer to the nucleus of the atom. due to this, the nuclear charge of the atom is more and thus does not allow the free electrons to flow freely. in the case of a larger atom, the number of shells are more and the free electrons in the last orbit are much farther away from the nucleus of the atom. due to this, the nuclear charge of the atom is less and easily allows the free electrons to flow and thus is more metallic.
