Why does negative sign is taken to represent force of attraction and positive sign for force of repulsion?

As we know force is a vector quantity and hence , we have apply sign of the charge for finding the force So in case, if we have 2 different types of charges i.e positive and negative , sure they will attract and q1q2 will get negative If in case both the charges have same sign then F will get positive
