The impedance of two capacitors in series is equal to the sum of the individual impedances of the two capacitors. Since the impedance is proportional to the inverse of the capacitance, the larger impedance of the series circuit means a smaller capacitance. Capacitors connected in series will have a lower total capacitance than any single one in the circuit.
