Metallic oxides are generally basic in nature, and when they mixed in water they forms a base. Non metallic oxides are generally acidic in nature and whey they mixed with water they form an acid . For example mgo when mixed with h20 it forms abse I.e mg(oh)2 And when so2 mixed with h20 it forms an acid ,I.e h2so3,sulphurous acid~~.
