In the story 'The Necklace', Matilda is shown as an envious women who is always discontent with her life. She is so obsessed with material possessions that she disregards the things she has: a comfortable home, food and a loving husband. In the beginning of the story, we observe that she has a laundry list of all the things she doesn't have but she feels that she deserves them. The only time she can be seen content is when she gets the dress and the necklace but after losing the necklace, her life became even worse than before. Her desires led to her downfall and by the time she learnt the lesson of contentment, it was too late.
