Rights : Rights are necessary for the very sustenance of a democracy. In a democracy every citizen has the right to vote and the right to be elected to government. People also enjoy the right to express their opinion, form political parties and take part in political activities. Rights protect minorities from the oppression of majority. (ii) Power sharing -Democracies accommodate diversities by following the principle of powersharing. In a democracy power is shared among different communities, people belonging to different ethnic composition (in Reservation of seats in the Parliament: To protect the rights of the weaker sections some democracies follow a system of reservation of seats in the parliament. For example : in India some constituencies are reserved for people who belong to the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. (iv) Dignity and Freedom to Women : Most of the democracies of the world treat women equal, and provide all the rights to women, These rights have a legal base. So it becomes easier for women to wage a struggle against the male-dominating society. Caste System in India : Democracy in India has strengthened the claims of the disadvantaged and the discriminated castes for equal status and equal opportunity.
