For Mandela courage does not mean the absence of fear but a victory over fear. According to him brave men need not be fearless but should be able to conquer fear. Courage was the result of decades of oppression and brutality. Courage, Mandela concludes, is the risk undertaken by men and women who gave their lives for an idea. It is being able to withstand without being shattered, by reflecting strength and resilience. Mandela understood that courage was not the absence of fear but the triumph over it. Being courageous also means being able to conquer the fear.
