A coil of current-carrying wire is otherwise known as a solenoid; it is often referred to as an electromagnet. ... The right diagram shows a cross-section of the same coil. The black circles represent where the current is flowing out of the coil and the black represent where it flows into the coils. The magnetic field around a current carrying coil is produced due to the current flowing through it. It is uniform throughout. It is just like the magnetic field of a bar magnet. If needles of a magnetic compass are arranged around the coil, they will arrange themselves in North to South direction.
