Lens : A lens is a piece of a transparent, refracting medium bounded by two surfaces, of which one is atleast a curved surface.
The commonly used lenses are the spherical lenses, which have either both surfaces spherical or one spherical and the other a plane one.
Spherical lenses are of two main types:
1) Convex or converging lens: A lens which is thicker at the centre than at the edges is called a convex lens. It converges a parallel beam of light on refraction through it and has a real focus.
2) Concave or diverging lens: The lens which is thinner at the centre than at the edges is called a concave or diverging lens. It diverges a beam of light on refraction through it or we can say a ray of light which is incident on the surface of the mirror, appears to converge after refraction. Hence, it has a virtual focus.
