In all unicellular organisms, the cell membrane acts as a respiratory surface.
- The cell membrane respires through the process of diffusion, by allowing oxygen in through the membrane. Due to the size of the organisms, there is no space for organs and breathe like multicellular organisms.
- Examples of single celled organisms are amoeba, paramecium. In amoeba, respiration takes place through the plasma membrane, where the oxygen gas dissolved in the surrounding, diffuses through the membrane.
