An amino acid is an organic molecule that is made up of a basic amino group (−NH2), an acidic carboxyl group (−COOH), and an organic R group (or side chain) that is unique to each amino acid. There are basically three major classifications for amino acids (1) those with nonpolar R group, (2) those with uncharged polar R groups, and (3) those with charged polar R group.
