    (x+y)2 = x2 - 2xy + y2

    = x2 + 2xy + y2 - 4xy 

    = (x+y)2 - 4xy 

    = 52 - 4 × 4 

    = 25 - 16 = 9

    ∴ x - y = √9 

    = 3
