Vladimir Lenin was the leader of the party. Lenin thought that in a repressive society like the Tsarist Russia , the party should be disciplined , and should control the number and quality of its members. The wanted to transform Russian society through revolution. ?

The Soviet Union's ideological commitment to achieving communism included the development socialism in one country and peaceful coexistence with capitalist countries while engaging in anti-imperialism to defend the international proletariat, combat capitalism and promote the goals of communism. Bolsheviks were in constant need of money because Lenin practised his beliefs, expressed in his writings, that revolutions must be led by individuals who devote their entire lives to the cause.
