Bleaching powder is a yellowish white powder with a strong smellof chlorine. When exposed to air, bleaching powder gives a smell of chlorine. This is becausebleaching powder reacts with carbon dioxide from theatmosphere to produce calcium carbonate and chlorine gas.

Bleaching powder, when exposed to air, reacts with atmospheric moisture to give out chlorine gas which causes the pungent smell.
