when a long isolated wire is tightly around in the shape of a spring with closely spaced turn that lie side by side, we get a solenoid. Generally, a solenoid is made by winding wire over a non conducting cylindrical tube. A solenoid differ from a circular coil in that the land of the solenoid is much greater than its diameter.

Solenoid is the generic term for a coil of wire used as an electromagnet. It also refers to any device that converts electrical energy to mechanical energy using a solenoid. The device creates a magnetic field from electric current and uses the magnetic field to create linear motion.
