Ionic compounds are formed by transfer of ions. That's why it conducts electricity

Answer: Ionic compounds are formed by transfer of electrons between metals and non metals resulting into cations and anions respectively. They are held by strong electrostatic forces and thus cannot be separated.

But when ionic compounds are dissolved in water, they result into ions due to high dielectric constant of water, thus the production of ions help to carry electrons and thus conduct electricity.
